About the Barge
"Fingal of Caledonia" is a 1930's Belgian 'Spitz' Barge 128 feet long with a beam of 16 feet. She worked carrying cargo on the European canals and rivers but was brought over to England and then Scotland to be converted for cruising.
She was bought by Martin Balcombe and Don Hind and converted in 1995 at Don's boatyard at Corpach, Fort William. This comfortable conversion provides ensuite accommodation in 6 cabins for up to twelve guests and six crew.
The engine is a six cylinder Gardner 6LXB and an 18 Kva generator provides 230volt power morning afternoon and evening. At night we switch over to an inverter which keeps essential services running from the extensive battery bank.
Our 6 burner commercial range in the galley is serviced by bottled gas and the central heating boiler is converted to run on diesel fuel.
The tender and safety boat is a 5m RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) with a 50hp 4 stroke Yamaha outboard engine. This will carry 10 people or with fewer people aboard can achieve over 20 knots.
